Seomun Market opened in its current location in the 1920s after reclaiming the Cheonhwangdangji Reservoir, but it has a much longer history. In the Joseon dynasty, Seomun Market was one of three major markets in the nation. It was called Seomun Market because it was located on the west side of the Daegu Fortress. Despite relocating, the alleyways of the original market still feature names of the items available there, such as Hongdukkae Pancake and Chicken Pancake Alley. Textile-related goods are the main products available now, but they also offer a little bit of everything else, including silk goods, dry goods, undershirts, crafts, dishes, clothes, and dried seafood.

💡 Overview

Daegu Stadium is a sports stadium located in Daeheung-dong, Suseong-gu in Daegu. Construction of the stadium began on July 28, 1997 and was completed on May 20, 2001. Its roof is designed to resemble a globe, incorporating the beautiful curves found in the roofs of traditional Korean houses.

The stadium seats approximately 66,000 people and is suitable for hosting large-scale international sports games and 74% of the seats are protected by a Teflon-coated overhang. The 47,407 square meter stadium has three stories below ground and three above ground floors and is built on a 512,479 square meters of land just 9 kilometers southeast of the city’s downtown area.

Stadium facilities include a gymnasium, baseball field, indoor ice rink, horseback riding track, tennis court, fitness center, shooting range, archery range, skateboard park, and an indoor jogging course. There are smaller buildings for taekwondo, judo, and rock climbing.

Daegu Stadium has hosted a number of 2002 FIFA World Cup matches; Senegal vs. Denmark (June 6), Slovenia vs. South Africa (June 8), Korea vs. U.S.A. (June 10) and Korea vs. Republic of Turkiye (June 29).

Located in Pojeong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, the Daegu Modern History Museum was officially opened on January 24, 2011. The museum is housed in a building that is rich in history. First built by Japan in 1932 as a bank, the building was once a symbol of repression and exploitation during the Japanese colonial rule. Today, the building stands proudly as an educational site and bears the title of ‘Cultural Property No. 49’ in recognition of its historical and cultural significance.

The two-story museum (1,971 square meters) houses a permanent exhibition (1F), featured exhibition (2F), and a hands-on exhibition room and classroom for diverse cultural activities and lectures. The history exhibition features the lifestyle of Daegu citizens, local customs, and education of the late 19th century and the early 20th century.

Petite Joongang Family Museum is a family-owned museum that showcases the antiquities of Oriental medicine, as practiced by a local family for three generations over 90 years in the city of Daegu, a city known for its 350-year-old medicinal herb market. 💡 Overview

Nokdongseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1789 in honor of General Kim Chung-seon (1571-1642), who contributed greatly to Korea’s defense during the Imjin War (1592-1598). The academy was shut down in 1868, and reinstated in 1885. Then, in 1971, it was moved to its current location. Today, General Kim’s tablet is enshrined in this hall, where a memorial service is held every March. In October 1987, E-World began construction on a tower and theme park, completed the master plan for the construction in 1993, and opened it in March 1995. It is a European-style city park decorated with waterfalls, fountains, lights, and flowers, with rides, exhibitions, art spaces, and restaurants that all ages can enjoy. 💡 Overview

Construction on the National Debt Redemption Movement Memorial Park began in March 1998 and was completed in December 1999. The park was established to retain the spirit of the National Debt Redemption Movement that originated in Daegu in 1907 and the 2nd movement in 1997 that was held to help overcome the national economic distress affected by the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. The park also expanded the green space in the downtown area and offers a place of rest and relaxation to the general public.

Spanning 42,500 square meters in size, the park boasts the Dalgubeol Grand Bell, a bell pavilion, walking trails, and other amenities. The famous Dalgubeol Grand Bell was installed on the park grounds in December 1998 as a representation of harmony and prosperity and to symbolically awaken the people with its pure and clear ringing. In addition the convenient and beautifule amenities, the park also has several memorial plaques engraved with quotes from many significant historical figures who shaped Korea’s culture and values.
