Naju National Museum displays artifacts found near the Yeongsangang River region and preserves artifacts excavated from throughout the Jeolla region.

While most national museums are found within the city, Naju National Museum is the first national museum to be located in a rural countryside. Its location provides a perfect relaxing atmosphere for visitors to take time and appreciate what the museum has to offer.

Although the museum may be isolated from urban cities, it uses modern technology to provide convenient museum experience. Naju National Museum is the first national museum to integrate NFC features within smart phones with the exhibition guide system for all exhibition halls. This integrated feature acts as a means to provide communication both ways, as visitors can receive information guides and upload them on social media via smart phones.

In addition to the collection of artifacts, the open-type storage rooms and the hands-on activities offered at the experience center provide opportunities to personally witness and experience the process of preservation and storage of cultural assets.

💡 Overview

Hanhwa Aqua Planet Yeosu is the second largest aquarium in Korea and the first to be built entirely aboveground. Opened in 2012 with the Yeosu World Expo, the aquarium is an environmentally friendly building, using solar power for most of its energy use. The aquarium is divided into different sections such as Ocean Life, Marine Life, and Aqua Forest, as well as a hands-on experience zone. There are approximately 55,000 marine animals of about 300 species including rare animals such as beluga (white whale) and baikal seal living in the aquarium.

💡 Overview

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage is located along Gatbawi Culture Street in Mokpo. Managed by the Cultural Heritage Administration, it is the only marine museum in Korea to display marine cultural relics. Opened in 1994 as the National Maritime Museum, the name was changed in 2009. The two-story institute houses over 2,000 relics excavated from the sea around Korea. There are four main exhibition halls as well as an outdoor exhibition space and one special exhibition hall. Through the exhibits, visitors can see ships from the past as well was learn about the lifestyle and culture of people living in coastal villages.

💡 Overview

The Korean Bamboo Museum is a comprehensive complex that preserves, exhibits, produces, and allows people to experience bamboo products. First opened in 1981 at Damju-ri, the museum was expanded and relocated to the current location in March 1998. The Gasa Literature Collection was completed in October 2000 and is located in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, an area which is famous for its fertile land and rich historical heritage. Apart from the main building, additional buildings include a souvenir shop, and traditional tea house. In the museum, historical literature such as “Myeonangjip” (a collection of Gasa poems by Song Sun) and “Songgangjip,” (a collection of Gasa poems by Jeong Cheol) are on display. There are 11,461 artifacts and literature on Gasa culture, 18 Gasa works, and 15,000 books about Gasa.

The area of Naju has long been at the forefront of the natural dyeing and silk production industry. The natural setting of fresh water from the Yeongsangang River along with the salt water from the sea are perfect for growing the plants necessary for a deep indigo color. As such, it is the only area to be recognized for its natural dyeing (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage) by the Cultural Heritage Administration. The best place to experience this local heritage is at the Natural Dyeing Culture Center. The center offers experience programs and educational programs, as well as exhibitions and sales of naturally dyed products.
